Gorilla Massage Fund FAQs
What is the Gorilla Massage Fund? We are a nonprofit organization that provides grants for massage therapy and acupuncture for people who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
How did the GMF get started? Founder John Cogan named the organization after his golf partner, whose prodigious swing earned him the nickname “Gorilla.’’ The Gorilla has multiple sclerosis and has benefited from massage therapy. For several years, Cogan and several friends pitched in to fund the Gorilla’s massages. In 2006, this group decided to expand their efforts and formed a nonprofit organization.
How does the GMF raise money? Through benefits such as a golf tournament.
Our first tournament in 2006 raised $10,000. We also are looking for sponsors for
on-going efforts. Contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. As a
volunteer organization, we have low overhead.
Why is the GMF needed? Many people with chronic diseases are unable to work and therefore have less income. They also may have lost their health insurance. Even people with insurance find that complementary and alternative treatments may not be covered.
Which treatments will be offered? We are starting with massage therapy and acupuncture. Our goal is to include other therapies that research has shown reduce pain and improve the quality of life for people with chronic diseases.
How will you help people pay for treatments? We will provide 50 percent of the cost of treatment, for four treatments, for each person who qualifies.
How will you find out who’s in need? Our practitioners will handle each case on an individual basis. Individuals in need or people who know someone in need of this grant can contact our network provider.
How will people qualify? Grant recipients must be on disability or public assistance
because of their diagnosis and not have insurance coverage for alternative treatment.
Where can people find out how to apply? Contact licensed massage therapist Craig Danehy, owner of Integrated Wellness Systems and coordinator of our provider network, at (585) 292-6428, ext. 1, or at cdanehy-iws@rochester.rr.com.
How can I help? We welcome your financial donations and in-kind contributions. We also would appreciate your time and we have volunteer positions that would make the most of your skills. Please contact Gorilla Massage Fund director Kelly Reilly (585-545-6642 or kreilly@lsigc.com) or communications director Patti Singer (585-355-5484 or pattisinger@fitrightin.com).
